The Compass Philosophy

Our business philosophy is based on a simple premise, the Intrinsic Value Proposition or IVP.  We believe that every successful company, big or small has an intrinsic value proposition that defines the company’s purpose and sets them apart from their competition.  A company’s IVP can best be described as that non-verbal, second nature way of conducting business that a business leader exudes to their key relationships (employees, customers, referral sources and vendors) through day to day interaction.  Each relationship type uses the business leader’s example, or IVP, to make decisions on how to interrelate with the business.

We find that lost IVP is a common thread that runs through the financial difficulties of the companies we see.  In most cases, it is due to an outside event such as a lawsuit, extended illness, changing market or the loss of a major customer that causes the business leader to lose focus or turn his or her attention away from the day to day operation of the business.  The connection with key relationships is lost and the company starts to falter.  As outside issues mount; focus, direction, morale and financial stability erode.

Rediscovering the Value

We have developed a process that helps our clients identify, verbalize and reintroduce their IVP to their key relationships as part of an overall strategy for corporate renewal.  A properly written and communicated IVP is a powerful tool.  In many cases we find that vendors, customers, creditors and company employees are frustrated, angry or just plain worn down from the day to day struggles of trying to conduct business with the company.  The intrinsic value proposition can re-energize all parties by introducing a common sense of focus, direction and identity to the equation.  People start to find comfort again as their efforts find a sense of purpose and concerns are alleviated.

Accelerating the Recovery Process

Blending the IVP with proven corporate renewal tools and practices makes the steps of the recovery process easier for all parties to accept.  The company’s focus and direction helps it anticipate problems and take steps to resolve them before they become crises.  As the company heals its key relationships and begins to perform financially, we are often required to wrap parts of our interim management and strategic growth management services into the engagement.  It is critical that the accelerating performance of the company be properly managed, key relationships maintained and that the company’s sense of focus and direction is not lost.

Maintaining the Progress

The clients who have graduated our corporate renewal program tell us that their IVP is an important part of their long-term success.  They use it to help orient new employees, mount new sales efforts and as a rallying point to prevent short-term situations from turning into long-term problems.
